A Tale of Two Citiesdirected by Phil Newton performances 11th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th October 2012
To Arms, Citizens!!
A Tale of Two Cities is a massive tale covering 10 years or so that will take the audience on a rollercoaster ride through England, France, and the whole emotional gamut. To achieve this I need committed people. Most of the company are on most of the time, and everyone will play more than one role. All will present the genteel inhabitants of Soho (they were then!) as well as the rough and malnourished denizens of the fag-end of Paris … not to mention red-caps and the cruel voyeurs at the Old Bailey.
Characters
Even the larger parts will double here and there … so you see that Commitment is more important than anything else!
I need you all to be prepared with some text you know by heart … anything … yes, anything … and I will ask you to read it so I can hear your voice.
I'll then ask you to repeat it in another way, to see how you react and see the extent of your control over voice and body. Maybe I'll set up a situation to see how emotional you can become.
I know that not everyone is keen on this sort of thing. It's risky. It exposes one. But the rehearsal process will need everyone to be creative to a high degree. I cannot block two hours of mass movement, and need people who want to take the risks associated with taking decisions and acting on instinct.
So, I need all shapes and sizes. The larger parts are:
The vulnerable young beauty The hero The lawyer The kindly older man The ferociously protective aunt The dangerous spiteful woman The liar The Count The Narrator
